Scheffau, Austria

A pretty Austrian ski resort, Scheffau's wide, gentle runs and excellent ski school make it perfect for beginners - ideal for families of any age range.

Scheffau’s part of the SkiWelt, one of the biggest ski areas in Austria – and the wide, gentle runs and excellent ski school make it a good pick for beginners and intermediates. There’s also a brilliant kids’ area, and lots of traditional mountain huts where you can stop off for a drink or bite to eat.

The village itself is pretty and authentic, with an old church, chalet-style buildings and restaurants dishing up classic Austrian favourites. It’s a fairly quiet place, so it’s popular with families – though if you do fancy a livelier night out, you can take a short taxi ride to neighbouring Ellmau.

When you’re not skiing, take a tour of the village in the back of a horse-drawn sleigh or meet some new furry friends on a dog sledding adventure. And don’t miss a visit to the Alpeniglu snow village, which has a hotel, church and restaurant made entirely of ice.

The Hotel Alpin has been a bit of a family favourite for years, and there are plenty of reasons why.

The location is fantastic – it's opposite Scheffau's baroque church at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser mountains. Under normal conditions, you can ski from almost outside the Alpin, right down to the Bergbahn gondola. If the snow is a little more sparse in the village, the ski bus stops right in front of the hotel too.

Once back at the hotel, you can go for a dip in the indoor swimming pool. For adults, there's the wellness area with sauna and steam bath.

Scheffau is fairly quiet in the evenings, so you can spend your time relaxing back at the Alpin. To make sure you get the most value from your stay, you'll get drinks included with dinner. There's also a self-service tea area that's open 24/7 so you can help yourself to a cuppa whenever you fancy it.

Speaking of dinner, the food at the Alpin has a great reputation. Breakfast gives you a wide buffet selection, including bacon and eggs, cereals and fresh fruit. And in the evenings, you can eat in the excellent main dining room where you'll have a good mix of local and international flavours on the menu.

The Alpin is spread across two buildings – Alpin 1 and Alpin 2. The leisure facilities and main dining room are in Alpin 1, while the reception is in Alpin 2.
